Should Dress Codes be Banned From School?

There are many reasons to whether or not the dress code should be banned. We believe that the dress code should stay, but there are various reasons on why the dress code should be banned from schools.

Yes:
Students shouldn't be forced to wear "school appropriate clothes". The dress code limits the type of style a student can have at school. Some students like to express their personality through their outfit, which they can't do if the dress code is stopping them.Students have the right to wear what ever they want! If teachers are allowed to wear many types of clothes that suit them, such as slippers or spagetti-stapped shirts, then students should be able to wear what they want to wear too.

Students should wear what ever outfit they are comfortable in. When summertime is near, students aren't allowed to wear summertime clothes, such as tank tops and short-shorts. Students will be very hot when in jeans, T-shirts, or any other clothes besides shorts and tank tops. Some students prefer slippers over shoes for various reasons, one may be because they feel more comfortable in slippers rather than shoes. If guys think that wearing clothes that are a little big on them and hats that have emblems on them look good on them, whats the real harm in expressing yourself? Thanks to the dress code though, students can't be in many clothes that are suitable for them

Did you know that students who wear clothes agianst the dress code can get sent home for doing almost nothing? Mary Brewer, a Painesville resident and a very concerned parent, has a daughter that goes to a school that doesn't joke when it comes to the dress code. Mary Brewer said, “I pulled my daughter out of Painesville school system because to me, that’s kind of a communist attitude.” .

The dress code is still here today because many people believe you need to "dress for sucess". I think it is sterotypic for someone to judge a student by the way they dress. A student can get an A on a test while dressing in their own way.

No:
Dress code should not be banned because students should not be allowed to wear inappropriate clothes in school. People that still go to school should not show to much "details" of their body. They are still at a young age (even though they are teens) and shouldn't be allowed to wear any tank tops or short-shorts at school. Students who are in revealing clothes will cause a major distraction to the other students learning. School is a place for learning, not a hangout place to show off any of your taste in outfits.

There should be a limit to what the students could wear and could not wear. If there is no dress code than a lot of students will be wearing inappropriate clothes, especially in middle school and high school. If there is a parent at home, they wouldn't allow there kids to wear those kind of clothes anyway. They can dress the way they want to after school or on the weekends, but not at school. If there was no limitations then all students will go overboard with there outfits. If there is no dress code, then that means students can wear completely ANYTHING they want, and anything they don't want! Do you want to see a student running around the campus, naked? Probably not, so the dress code should be here to stay in order to keep students well mannered. Students dressing inappropriately will start learning in a negative manner.

When summertime is near and students feel hot, they dont have to wear shorts or tank tops. They can wear capris, shorts (that are not too short), skirts (that is not too short), or tights to cool them selves off. They don't have to wear short-shorts,tank tops, or other clothes that are revealing to cool them off. There are other clothes than inappropriate clothes to cool them off. What I am saying is that students can wear what ever they want. but there has to be a limit to what they can or cannot wear. Wearing short-shorts and spagetti-stapped shirts aren't the only way to cool off. Joffrey Jones, superintendent of Euclid School District, knows exactly what we mean when it comes to giving students freedom, but not letting them rule the school. “We required that jeans not have lots of writing on them or airbrushing. We addressed the sagging of the pants. We wanted shirts not to come down below mid-thigh if worn outside of the pants” he said, knowing that students should realize they can look ready for school and stay "in style" at the same time.

When a student wears a certain outfit, they can be judged because of the way they look. If a male student wears baggy pants, doorags, bandanas etc., then he might be thought to be in a gang because of the way he looks. Looking like a gang member is one thing, but the consquences to looking like a "thug" are unpredictable. If a female student wears a tank-top or short-shorts to school, many people will think of her as a person who is worrying more about her image rather than learning in school. Students can also get less respect when they dress inappropriately. Study shows that "The feeling I'm getting from the younger alum, that I was unaware of, is that there are a significant number of students dressing like Miss Jay from 'America's Next Top Model' or Lil' Wayne all the time" said Robert A. Brown (the tenth president of Boston University) in a disappointed voice.

"Each student must promote and portray a positive image and properly represent themselves and the college,"
Painesville Superintendent Michael Hanlon said the district is really shooting for a business casual look and the school board recently approved implementing this dress program into the high school starting this fall.
